Memorial Day is a Time for Reflection and Action, Thoughts from CEO, Karen Ross

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance. It is a day to commemorate the fallen members of the military; a day dedicated to safeguarding their legacy. It is a day to reflect on the freedoms that are afforded to us, as much as it is a day to give back. President John F. Kennedy said it best: “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words but to live by them.” So today and every day, we live by them.

Last year, we honored #MemorialDay amidst the backdrop of a global pandemic. Today, we are defeating it. Soon enough we will be able to resume our commemorative Memorial Day traditions. While we have spent the past year thanking and honoring our healthcare personnel, and numerous essential workers, let us also extend our deep gratitude to those who have served during this tumultuous time, and let us have a moment of silence for those who lost their lives. Everyone protecting the United States is a hero. Everyone who has risked their life in service of our country is our luminary.

Sharp Decisions has and always will be a supporter of veterans, both for those who are with us and for those who have fallen. With our near decade-long V.E.T.S. program, we take action by hiring veterans and offering them a respectful wage. We have learned time and time again that there is no better trained workforce than military personnel. Today’s military is the most technologically advanced, and subsequently, has the most technologically literate members. This intensive training creates the very skills that organizations and companies are in need of today.

In honor of Memorial Day, I encourage my fellow business leaders to create a veterans-specific hiring program. By reflecting on what veterans have done — and continue to do — for our country, one of the best ways we can thank them is by meaningful employment. The impact on workplace morale is palpable as veterans enter positions where they are highly dedicated to the mission. With a direct call-to-action, we will ensure that veterans come back from service working high-skilled jobs in our current high-tech climate.

Let today be a reminder of our integrity, dedication, and strength as a nation, only made possible by those who defend our country. As we embark on the next season of our days— summer — and slowly begin to integrate into a post-pandemic life, we need to remember those who gave us these freedoms. By offering a respectful wage, immersive training, and job security, we ensure that our veterans are taken care of and that their sacrifices are not in vain. We will always remember those who have fallen. And we support those who are still here.
