Memorial Day 2023 | Sharp Decisions

Memorial Day is a sacred holiday for us to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice to uphold and fight for our freedoms. The fearlessness and strength of the brave United States soldiers that have passed should inspire us to act in showing our gratitude and reverence for their service to our nation.

As I reflect on this Memorial Day, I find myself proud of the positive strides we are making – at Sharp Decisions and across the country – in improving the lives of those who served or are currently serving our country.

Veteran Unemployment Remains Low

According to The US Department of Labor, the veteran unemployment rate fell to 2.4% from 2.5% in February. While the unemployment rate remains low – veterans are much more likely to be underemployed than their civilian counterparts. That’s why Sharp Decisions pioneered the industry-first V.E.T.S.™ (Vocation, Education, and Training for Service Members) Program in 2013 to elevate highly skilled and experienced veterans into fair, equitable jobs.

Improving Veteran Mental Healthcare

Earlier this year, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) launched an expansion of care aimed at helping veterans undergoing suicidal crises.

“Veterans in acute suicidal crisis will be able to go to any VA or non-VA health care facility for emergency health care at no cost – including inpatient or crisis residential care for up to 30 days and outpatient care for up to 90 days. Veterans do not need to be enrolled in the VA system to use this benefit.”

Working Towards Ending Veteran Homelessness

The VA announced they have found and secured permanent housing for 40,401 homeless veterans in 2022. We still have a long way to go, but every single veteran that is no longer unhoused should be celebrated.

I urge us all to remember that while progress is slow, we are moving the needle forward on providing better care, opportunities, and quality of life for our veterans. As a nation, we must constantly improve on how we honor our bravest, but on a solemn day like Memorial Day, let’s be grateful for the strides we are making for those that serve, have served, or will one day serve our country.

Have a safe Memorial Day.
